A woman with too much knowledge was at risk for insanity. Her fragile mind couldn’t handle it. That’s what Lil had been told when she went against convention and became an attorney. The 1800’s had fewer women lawyers than women doctors. Her pride knew no bounds when she hung her shingle—L.M. Wentfield, Attorney At Law.
Drew was a struggling cattle rancher, building a fledgling Hereford empire. He was working toward that goal when he was accused of rustling and faced possible hanging. He needed a lawyer—a good one—a man. Chesterfield had one lawyer—a new one—L.M. Wentfield. He wasn’t prepared for a beautiful blonde with a sharp tongue and fiercely won independence.
Lil had no homemaking abilities. Her love was the law. And if the thoughts of the gray-eyed cowboy, who had the audacity to refuse her legal help, stayed in her mind, she’d push them aside. She had nothing to offer a rancher . Even her wealth wouldn’t be considered an asset to a prideful man. And Drew Jackson was proud. So proud, he knew he couldn’t ask a woman of Lil’s stature to share his life—but he wanted to—from the moment he’d stolen that first kiss.

An awesome book with a heroine who grabs your attention from the very first page! While she does tell a few little lies along the way, she is very gutsy! I didn't want to put the book down once I started! I kept it with me wherever I went in case I had a few minutes to read! I didn't want it to end! The reader was taken a long way through dangerous times and the heroine was always there with a spunky spirit and unbelievable strength that put the men to shame! I wish there was a follow-up to this one!Product details

One Shingle to Hang A Western Romance edition by DeAnn Smallwood Romance eBooks Reviews
Lil Wentfield is a disappointment to her parents. Her rich banker father and his snobbish wife wanted a sweet, docile deb for a daughter. Instead they got one that was intelligent, inquisitive, and stubborn. After being sent to a boarding school she hated and being denied a college education, Lil moves in with her uncle who takes her on as his law clerk. After passing the bar exam, she sets out for a small town to set up as *gasp, horror!* an attorney. At this time in the 1800s, female attorneys are even rarer than female doctors. One of her first cases has her meeting Drew Jackson, a handsome rancher. After her ill treatment and disrespect at the hands of her father, she is determined to stay a spinster. But Drew just might make her change her mind. The plot of this novel was good and the author obviously did her research well. The heroine was great. She was a young woman determined to make it on her own. Although she was stubborn and outspoken, she was also quick to welcome others into her home and her heart. Drew was perfect for her. Secondary characters were also well done. I am looking forward to more from this author.
There are no sexual situations to offend any readers and other than a couple of "damns," there is no problem with language.
This Western romance worked for me on so many levels. Lillian (Lil) Mae Wentfield is a pariah to her wealthy, aristocratic parents Smart, independent, highly educated in law by her uncle and totally devoid of the domestic skills expected of ladies in that era. She plans to remain a spinster and practice her craft in a small Colorado town. However, behind her brittle and haughty exterior is a woman with a fragile heart who craves to love and be loved. Drew Jackson owns an emerging ranch near that town and he has no time for finding a wife. Accused of the hanging offense of cattle rustling by a rival rancher, he desperately needs legal help. Handsome Drew is respected, charismatic, kind, ambitious and minimally educated in a country school. Neither of these unsuspecting individuals, in their wildest dreams, expected the collision of romantic attraction that overwhelms them upon their first legal encounter! The author does a brilliant job of exploiting and weaving the intense emotions surrounding this unlikely couple throughout the story. Along the way, we meet some of Lil's charming helpers and friends. The descriptions of life in the mid 19th century by the author make the book come alive in the most vivid way. The confrontation between Lil and her autocratic, unloving and controlling parents is reading at it's best. This book will go directly to my Goodreads "favorites" shelf because that is where it belongs.
I thoughly enjoyed this book. Ms. Smallwood has a writing knack that undeniable. Her research into her stories shows that she does her homework, and the heroine, Lil, in this book, sadly existed way before women's rights and supportive parents. I don't want to give away the story as some reviewers do, but simply to endorse this author and tell you what wonderful descriptions and research go into her words. If you love romance as well as westerns, then this is definitely something you will enjoy. After meeting her parents, I felt so happy that Lil got to meet a set that accepted her as she was and welcomed her with open arms. What a great contrast.
I really liked this book a lot. I liked Lil, and her vocabulary, especially, and most of the other characters, with the exception of Lil's parents, who are truly dreadful-the bad guy was actually more likeable.. It was inventive, well-plotted, nicely paced, well-written, and the author has a good sense of humor.
This is also well-edited, with only two minor mistakes such as an incorrect name for a character, and a repeated word in a sentence-small stuff. I am mentioning this only because some of the books I have been reading lately have many more than two errors, some of them not so minor, and it was quite refreshing not to see any until over 70% of the way through. It's what reading used to be, and should still be. I might add that I don't try to find these, they just seem to pop up in front of me and grab my attention.
This was a good, clean read with no violence, graphic sex and virtually no offensive language, just an occasional hell, or damn, which are usually cause for an immediate apology, and then changed to heck or darn. I can highly recommend this as good entertainment.
The story had the characters developed, there was mystery, humor, family and love. The storyline kept my interest on what would happen next. The negative I had was envisioning the era. Reference was made about a woman's group formed (which would be about 1900), then indoor plumbing (which was about 1930) but the language and talk kept bringing me back to the latter 1800. I had a hard time with that. I feel the Author could have brought it all together to make it easier to envision.
This book was awesome. It was exciting,it made me laugh and cry. DEANN SMALLWOOD is a great author. The book is also a good, clean read. This is her second book I've read and I'm going to read all of her books.Keep writing.Thank you.Patsy
